Cursor Tab suggests a keystroke. Cursor Composer drives the IDE. These five tools take an entire task end-to-end from a terminal or a side panel — install, run, edit files, hit MCP servers, commit. They’re the “agent layer” that sits below your IDE. We compared how each installs, what license it ships under, who maintains it, and which MCP surface it reads.

Five agent-flavored AI coding tools. All five do roughly the same job (take a task, run it across files); they differ on license, host surface, MCP integration, and provider lock-in. The decision usually falls out of one of these five buckets:
- Vendor-neutral OSS, broadest MCP ecosystem → Goose. Apache 2.0, Linux Foundation (AAIF) stewardship, 70+ MCP extensions out of the box, works with any LLM provider.
- Already in VS Code, want permission-gated agent → Cline. VS Code extension; multi-provider model support; MCP-native with tool-creation on demand.
- Pair-programming with deep git integration → Aider. Python CLI, codebase-mapping for large repos, every change becomes a commit. No native MCP.
- Already paying for Claude → Claude Code. Anthropic first-party, MCP-native, IDE plugins for VS Code and JetBrains, included in Pro / Max plans.
- TUI + MIT + provider-agnostic → OpenCode. Terminal UI, broad adoption, both MCP and LSP integration, any provider you have an API key for.

What agent-flavored AI tools do
A “coding agent” here means a tool that takes a plain-language task (“refactor the auth middleware to use the new JWT helper”) and runs it across your repo: reads files, writes edits, runs your test suite, asks you to approve a shell command, commits when it’s done. The boundary that matters:
- Autocomplete tools (Cursor Tab, GitHub Copilot, Codeium, Tabnine, Cody) live per keystroke. They don’t take tasks; they suggest the next character or line. Tab to accept. No shell access, no multi-file orchestration.
- IDE-native agents (Cursor Composer, Windsurf Cascade, Kiro’s spec mode) live inside the IDE. They drive the editor: open files, scroll, edit, run terminals — but the agent loop is bundled with the editor binary, so you can’t swap it out.
- Stand-alone agents — the five tools in this post — are detached from the editor. They run in your terminal (Goose, Aider, Claude Code, OpenCode) or in an IDE pane that’s independent of the editor binary (Cline). You can pair them with any editor: open Cursor in one tab and a Goose session in another tab; the agent doesn’t care which editor renders the file.
That detachment is the headline reason to pick one of these over Cursor / Windsurf. You keep your editor preference, you keep your tool choice, you don’t migrate when a better editor lands next year. The cost is you have a second app to install and configure.

Every row in this matrix is decision-relevant. The two that decide most teams: provider lock-in (do you want to be free to swap LLM vendors?) and host surface (CLI, IDE extension, or TUI). The rest is gravy.
Goose — Linux Foundation OSS agent
Originally a Block project; now stewarded by the AAIF (Agentic AI Foundation) at the Linux Foundation. Apache 2.0, MCP-native, multi-provider.
What it does best
Goose is the “Switzerland” of the agent landscape. Vendor-neutral governance (Linux Foundation), no LLM provider preference, and the broadest published MCP extension catalog at the time of writing. The project bills itself as a general-purpose agent — it does code, but it also drives workflows beyond editing files, which is rarer than it sounds in this category.

- Need vendor-neutral OSS with formal governance (Linux Foundation) and don’t want a single company controlling the roadmap.
- Run multiple LLM providers and want a single tool that switches between Claude, GPT, Bedrock, local Llama, Gemini, etc. at runtime.
- Want the largest published MCP extension surface out-of-the-box — Goose ships with the broadest set of pre-built connectors.
- Want a desktop app as well as a CLI; Goose has both, most others don’t.

Cline — VS Code-native agent
Apache 2.0 VS Code extension. Despite the “cli” in the name, it’s an IDE pane, not a terminal tool.
What it does best
Cline lives in the VS Code sidebar and runs a permission-gated agent loop right next to your editor. Its headline differentiator is step-level approval: every file write, every shell command, every browser action, you see the proposed action and click through. That makes it the most auditable option in the group — useful when an agent might touch production credentials.

- Spend your day in VS Code and don’t want a separate terminal app or desktop window for the agent.
- Want explicit step-level permission for everything the agent does (no surprise edits, no surprise shell commands).

What it does best
Aider builds a repo map — a structural summary of every file in your codebase that fits into the model’s context window — so the agent can reason across files it hasn’t loaded. That’s the headline feature Aider has been refining since well before this category had a name. The other defining trait: every change becomes a git commit, with a generated message. Your work history becomes a paper trail of what the agent did.

Claude Code — Anthropic first-party
Anthropic’s official CLI. Proprietary. Included with Claude paid plans (Pro / Max); also usable via pay-as-you-go API. Native MCP because Anthropic created the protocol.
What it does best
Claude Code is the only tool in this group built by the LLM vendor itself. That alignment shows up in two places: MCP fidelity (Anthropic authored the spec, so Claude Code is a reference implementation, including remote MCP over streamable HTTP) and release cadence (when Anthropic ships a new Claude model or a new MCP feature, Claude Code is the first client to support it).

OpenCode pairs a polished terminal UI with the most permissive license in this group (MIT) and both MCP and LSP integration as first-class features. The LSP piece is unusual — it means OpenCode doesn’t just talk to MCP servers, it also reads your project’s language servers for editor-grade code intelligence (definitions, references, diagnostics) without you having to wire that up separately.

- Want a TUI rather than plain CLI output — OpenCode renders panes, file diffs, and command history in a way Aider doesn’t.
- Want MIT-licensed code you can fork, audit, or embed (Apache 2.0 OSS in the group is fine for most; MIT is friendlier for some legal reviews).
- Want provider-agnostic — bring any API key, OpenCode doesn’t prefer one LLM.

- You prefer a GUI desktop app — OpenCode is terminal-only.
- You want first-party vendor support — OpenCode is community-driven, although adoption is broad.
- You’re scared of the LSP setup overhead — OpenCode can ignore LSP entirely, but the “both MCP and LSP” pitch is part of the reason to pick it; without LSP you may as well use Goose.
Pricing shape
Four of the five tools are free open-source software. You pay only for LLM tokens at your provider’s rate. Claude Code is the exception — proprietary, and included in Anthropic plans.

For a single developer running an agent a few hours a day, the dominant cost is your LLM token spend, not the tool itself. Agent workloads use far more tokens than chat workloads (multi-step reasoning across files). Plan accordingly: a Claude Sonnet-heavy day on agent traffic can run from a few dollars to a few tens of dollars depending on repo size and task scope. Claude Pro / Max quotas absorb a meaningful chunk of that if you use Claude Code; otherwise budget API usage with care.
Common pitfalls
Treating Cline as a CLI
The name confuses first-time users. Cline is a VS Code extension; if you don’t use VS Code (or a compatible fork) it’s not the tool for you. Pick Goose or OpenCode for a true terminal experience.
Aider + MCP expectations
Aider is the only tool in this group without native MCP support at the time of writing. If your agent needs to hit Sentry, Linear, Datadog, or any other MCP-backed service, Aider will require you to script wrappers. Use Goose, Claude Code, OpenCode, or Cline.
Claude Code without a plan
Without a Claude paid plan, Claude Code runs on API pay-as-you-go — which can surprise you on cost if you’re used to flat-rate IDE tools. Start with the Pro or Max plan if you’ll use it daily; the included quota usually wins on cost.
Running multiple agents in the same repo
All of these tools edit your working tree directly. Running two of them in the same repo at the same time will conflict on file writes. Use git branches, or pick one agent per task; don’t expect them to coordinate.
Trusting a single LLM’s rate for budget
Agent token usage is 10–100× chat usage for the same elapsed time, because the agent loops on tool calls. A pricing estimate that looked safe for chat workloads will blow up for agent workloads. Cap your daily spend in the provider dashboard.
Adjacent tools to consider
These five aren’t the only options. A few worth knowing about even if they didn’t make the comparison cut:

FAQ
What's the difference between these tools and Cursor / Copilot?
Cursor and Copilot are autocomplete-flavored: you keep typing and they suggest the next character or line, accepted with Tab. The five tools in this post are agent-flavored: you describe a task in plain language and the tool runs it end-to-end — reading files, writing edits, running shell commands, asking permission as it goes. Is Cline a CLI? The name has 'cli' in it.
No — Cline is a VS Code extension, not a command-line tool. The name predates the extension's framing and is a remnant of the project's earlier identity. Everywhere it runs, it runs inside VS Code's sidebar. If you specifically want a terminal-native agent, look at Goose, Aider, Claude Code, or OpenCode. Cline still belongs in this comparison because its execution model — multi-step agent with permission gates — is the same shape as the other four, just hosted in an IDE pane rather than a shell.
Which of these has the best MCP support?
Claude Code, Goose, and OpenCode are MCP-native and have shipped the protocol from early days. Cline supports MCP and lets the agent create custom MCP tools on demand. Aider is the outlier — it does not have native MCP support at the time of writing; it interacts with the file system and your shell directly. If your stack depends on MCP servers (Datadog, GitHub, your internal APIs), the first four are functional out of the box; with Aider you'll be writing wrapper scripts.
Can I use these with multiple LLM providers?
Four of the five are provider-agnostic. Goose abstracts away the provider entirely — pick Anthropic, OpenAI, Bedrock, or a local model at setup time. Cline lists Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, AWS Bedrock, Azure, GCP Vertex, Cerebras, Groq, plus any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and local LM Studio / Ollama. Aider supports Claude, GPT, DeepSeek, Gemini, and local models. OpenCode is explicitly not coupled to any provider. Claude Code is the only one locked to Anthropic — by design, since it's Anthropic's first-party tooling.
Which is most stable for production use?
Aider has the longest track record and the smallest surface area — for serious pair programming in a single repo it is the safest pick. Claude Code is backed by Anthropic with a release cadence tied to the Claude model line, and feels production-grade. Goose moved under the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation, which adds governance maturity. OpenCode is community-driven but has very broad adoption already. Cline is the youngest of the group and the surface evolves faster — keep an eye on the changelog if you depend on it day-to-day.
Do any of them work offline / on a local model?
Yes — all four CLI tools support local-model providers. Goose, Aider, OpenCode, and Cline all let you point at LM Studio, Ollama, or any OpenAI-compatible local endpoint. Claude Code is the exception: it routes through Anthropic's API, so even with a paid plan it requires network access. Four of the five are free open-source software — Goose (Apache 2.0), Cline (Apache 2.0), Aider (Apache 2.0), OpenCode (MIT). You pay only for the LLM tokens your provider charges. Claude Code is proprietary and included with Claude paid plans (Pro / Max) and is also usable on pay-as-you-go API billing. For a single developer, expect $0/month if you're already on a Claude plan; otherwise budget for whatever your chosen LLM provider charges in tokens per active hour. Pricing of provider tokens is the dominant cost for all of these tools.
Should I use these with Cursor / Windsurf or instead of them?
It depends on workflow. Many developers run both — Cursor or Windsurf for IDE-native flow (autocomplete, Composer, in-editor chat) and one of these agents in a terminal for long-running tasks (refactor across files, fix the failing build, run a migration).
